How To Press Embroidered Linens
We here at the Brass Bed have been selling the finest linens in the world for almost fifty years now, and that includes applying gorgeous custom embroidery for our loyal clients.
A question that comes up often is how in the world you press out sheeting or powder room towels that have embroidery. Whether it's Swiss, which is thread only designs, or Applique', which involves cutting out sateen designs and anchoring them down with an embroidered border, we've got you covered on keeping them looking fresh and crisp, so all of that work done by hand can really shine.
Ironing embroidered linens requires a gentle approach to protect both the fabric and the decorative stitching. Begin by checking the care label and setting your iron to the appropriate temperature, usually low to medium heat for linen or cotton. Place the embroidered linen face down on a clean, padded ironing surface, preferably with a soft towel underneath. This cushions the embroidery and prevents the raised threads from being flattened or damaged. For extra protection, place a thin, clean pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric.
Work in small sections, moving the iron gently rather than pressing heavily or leaving it in one spot. Lightly mist stubborn wrinkles with water if the care instructions allow, and avoid ironing directly over delicate embellishments, metallic threads, beads, or other decorative elements. Once finished, let the linen cool and dry completely before folding or storing it. With the right temperature, a protective pressing cloth, and careful handling, you can keep embroidered linens smooth while preserving the texture and beauty of their intricate designs.
